Biography

Anastasia Dunets was born in Leningrad. She received excellent choreographic training and danced in a children’s group starting at the age of five and was then admitted to the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Sankt Petersburg at the age of ten, where she had the great fortune of studying under the tutelage of Natalia Dudinskaya and Konstantin Sergeev. She danced many featuring parts under the guidance of Madame Dudinskaya, including the part of Summer in Sergeev’s ballet “Seasons,” pas de deux from “Sleeping Beauty” and “Venetian Carnival” and the grand pas de deux from “Paquita” for the 250th anniversary celebration of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 1988. Anastasia also acted in several films about the Vaganova Ballet Academy and Natalia Dudinskaya as well as in the film-ballet “Carnival.” As a student, Ms. Dunets danced in the famed Mariinsky Theatre the part of Masha in “Nutcracker” with critics taking note of her superb technique and mature acting skills.

Upon graduation from the Vaganova Ballet Academy, Ms. Dunets danced in the Vaganova International Ballet Competition, taking home the 2nd place prize. She joined the Mariinsky Theatre ballet company in September of 1988, working with such acclaimed artists as Olga Moiseeva and G. Kekisheva. As a member of the Mariinsky Theatre Ms. Dunets toured internationally including Europe as well as the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and other countries. With the Mariinsky Ms. Dunets worked under the guidance of balletmaster Oleg Vinogradov. In 1993 she acted in his film “Coppelia”, and in 1994 she played part of Sister in his staging of “Cinderella,” which was first performed in Japan. This role allowed her to demonstrate her fine comedic acting skills.

In May of 1997 Ms. Dunets accepted an invitation to dance for the German National Berlin Opera, where she remained until 2000. This productive time period was full of premieres and creative work with new choreographers such as P. Bart, P.Lacotet, U.Sholts, M.Bolduin and others.

Beginning in August of 2000 Ms. Dunets has been dancing in the Finnish National Ballet, joining by invitation of its famed choreographer and director Jorma Uottinen. Here she danced for the first time the role of Gamzatti in Natalia Makarova’s staging of “La Bayadere.” With the Finnish National Ballet in their 2002-2003 season Ms. Dunets went on to dance many featuring parts including a solo role in Ben Stevenson’s “Cinderella,” as well as in Wayne Eagling’s “Nutcracker” and Sylvie Guillem’s “Giselle.” She also performed mail role in the Anna-Marie Holmes/Kevin McKenzie staging of “Raymonda,” a unique collaboration between the Finnish National Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, a work which was premiered in New York by American Ballet Theatre one year after its FNB premiere. Ms. Dunets’ role of Raymonda was a technical challenge which she met to great critical acclaim.

The 2006-2007 season at FNB continued to bring Ms. Dunets fresh challenges and opportunities. She danced in John Neumeier’s “The Seagull” in the roles of Polina and Masha, receiving the PRO DANCE award for her role of Masha.

In 2008-2009 Ms. Dunets performed the great role of Arkadina during the Finnish National Ballet’s tour to Macau. The next season (2009-2010) led to interesting work with the choreographer Cathy Marston in the one-act ballet “Blood Wedding” taken from the work of Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca, a work created especially for the dancers at FNB. In this Ms. Dunets performed the role of “Mother,” a tragic role requiring formidable acting skills.

While performing Ms. Dunets has also honed her craft as a teacher and coach, having joined the pedagogical faculty of the Vaganova Ballet Academy in September of 2005 and receiving her diploma as ballet teacher, ballet tutor, and theatre repertoire coach in December of 2009. In 2006 she also began teaching and coaching in Helsingin Tanssiopisto at the Helsinki Dance Institute. She has coached students who have gone on to win major prizes in many international ballet competitions and join illustrious ballet companies (Maria Baranova was in John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet, now principal dancer in Finnish National Ballet, Elina Miettinen now in American Ballet Theatre, Suvi Honkanen now in Finnish National Ballet).

Ms. Dunets continues to perform on stage, teach young dancers, and coach talented students toward success in major ballet competitions. She works with students at the Finnish National Ballet and actively participates in ballet workshops, international competitions, ballet seminars and enjoys guest teaching and conducting master classes.

In his first season with the Kirov Ballet he danced the lead of Albrecht in “Giselle”. His nobility and elegance in the role made an indelible impression on audiences. This led him to perform all the major male roles in the company’s classical repertoire, including Prince Siegfried in “Swan Lake,” Prince Desire in “Sleeping Beauty,” the Prince in “Nutcracker,” the Youth in “Chopiniana,” the Spectre in “Le Spectre de al Rose,” Vaslav in “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” and Colas in “Le Fille Ma Gardee.” Stanislav danced in Balanchine’s “Symphony in C” and in Boris Eifman’s “Cognition” to the music of Albinioni.
